Say it Now: Thank You to a Teacher

Educators today are very under appreciated. One rarely sees positive things written about education, and teachers in general. Dr. Mindy Sloan has put together more than a gift book for teachers. She recognizes the importance of teaching, and gives teachers positive tools to remind them how important they are. These thought provoking self esteem activities are just what teachers need today.

Every teacher should have one of these books in their everyday library. I would not even wait to receive this book as a gift. I would get one now. --Jason Siegel, Special Education Administrator, Teacher, 35 years experience

I loved the affirmations, alternate activities and the reminders about ALL the things that effective teachers do. Reminding teachers to take care of themselves and sharpen the saw regularly is vitally important. Teaching is a job that requires so much physical, emotional, creative and spiritual energy that it is easy to burn out, or at least feel a little crispy around the edges! The daily requests are a wonderful way to start the day. I have already printed that page and put it with my prayer journal.

Say It Now is the perfect gift for a teacher. It touches teachers and those of us who love teachers at many different levels, but most of all it says A DEEP, HEARTFELT THANK YOU for the important and wonderful work done by teachers. As Harry Wong said, Teaching is the most important profession, because without teachers, there would be no other professions! --Mike Illuzzi, Teacher, Special Education Administrator, Principal, 33 years experience

It is a critical evaluation tool for teachers, yet difficult to find time for reflection during our busy days. So, I am particularly anxious to recommend your book to new teachers. I believe that most dedicated teachers were not prepared for the "effective" things they do. Rather, they learned "on the job". Your book will prompt them to reflect and bring a voice to their experiences early in their careers. I think your book will assist in unraveling their complicated and overwhelming roles as new teachers. I really enjoyed the closing and am! half way through the personal statements. How revealing! Thank you --Rita Pertzborn, Teacher, Educational Consultant, 26 years experience

Survival Guide for New Teachers and What to Expect Your First Year of Teaching

These two books, Survival Guide for New Teachers and What to Expect Your First Year of Teaching, written by Amy DePaul of the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Educational Research and Improvement, summarize the observations, insights, and classroom tips learned from the experiences of these outstanding teachers in 1996 and 1997.

Each year the national education lending corporation Sallie Mae sponsors the First Class Teacher Award program for outstanding elementary and secondary teachers from each of the fifty states plus the District of Columbia, Mariana Islands, and Virgin Islands.

Winners are nominated by their school superintendents and chosen by a panel of education experts based on their superior instructional skills and interaction with students, faculty, and parents.

And each year, the first-year teachers receiving the award come to Washington, D.C., to share their experiences in focus group discussions facilitated by the U.S. Department of Education.

Discussion topics include how new teachers can work effectively with:

  • veteran teachers,
  • parents,
  • principals, and
  • teacher educators.
